Lightbulb Peition: Build a better "town"!

Hello everyone, and especially to DR (if he's here).

My concern today, is this: While Mafia itself is a fantastic and really fun game to play, what on earth is this "town" supposed to be, that is shown at night?

In all honesty, looking around, the town consists mainly of:
    • Gray containers
    • Wind Turbines
    • A few radar stations
    • Nuke plants
    • Strangely misplaced corn fields
    • And lots and lots of yellow boxes. (What's with all those yellow boxes?!?!)

In short, the "town" looks more like a weird post-apocalyptic prison colony than a town that any sane person would like to live in.

I hereby humbly suggest to maybe rework the town to look more townlike. I understand that it should look spooky and dangerous, especially at night where the camera moves around it, but aren't there better ways of doing that than placing containers, radar stations and tons of yellow boxes everywhere?

Cheers and thanks for any comments, criticism or rebukes for my post ;-)

Agreed. It's common knowledge that it look DR longer to plan out and set up the town, than it did to write the entire game.

I understand that's the reason why SC2 took so long to come out after Brood War. They had to wait for DR to finish designing the town first. Otherwise it woulda been out back in 2002, with the release of World of StarCraft following up in 2004.

When they had to delay the release of SC2 for DR, they decided to come up with World of WarCraft instead of StarCraft, as the storyline of WoS wouldn't make sense without the story of SC2 preceding it. Sad circumstances.

It did, however, give them the time to expand SC2 into three separate games which they could sell to milk us for all the money they want.

@ Bruno, Yes. If you watch a replay, you can see a command center at the start. That's his house!!!!!!!

@ Glip, WoS would have been 1000000 times better

    *le sad

Though I agree, town should be remade and expanded. With the new camera views the town looks incredibly odd because it ends suddenly. The town should be 2x bigger

    Spoiler : :

FM XV - Star Wars : Citizen
FM XIV - FuzzyWuzzyTown : Doctor

Also, I thought boxes were for patrons and that's why there's names next to them.
Chill friend. First, I never denied there was a lot of work which went into that. I am certain that a lot did. While I always respect people who work hard, I myself always found it helpful when people told me I was working into the wrong direction, which can always happen, as I'm sure you'll agree.

Second, I didn't know it was his hometown. But I still doubt that his hometown looks exactly like this one. You mean his hometown has corn fields amidst nuke plants where green barrels are out in the open being rolled around, all this overlooked by radar stations with searchlights, steep cliffs and absolutely no streets to connect anything?

As to the names, written in the grass, these always confused me, but I guess they make sense. There are too many boxes though to account only for the patrons. But I get that point now. It's a cool idea in my opinion, if only it were somewhat more visible ingame.

Those boxes are patrons. The golden ones with names next to them are benefactors. The regular donors get a huge red community communist box on the bottom left corner. Box sizes correlate to donation amount, btw.

Also, the town IS a post-apocalyptic prison colony. Why the fuck else would nobody leave when there are so many serial killers, arsonists, crazy people, and mobsters?

Hey DR, I've always been curious, how much do of the game do you make yourself? Like do you code everything? If so, that's pretty impressive. What coding languages do you use and where did you learn how to program videogames/your previous experience?

Also, if you don't mind me asking, who does the animations/artwork? Did you model the map as well?

I'm interested in creating my own custom SC2 game, but have no previous experience or knowledge on programming Just started learnin python a couple of days ago.

Nice. Considering you're 19 and the game is what, 2 years old? You must've made it in highschool lol. I'll stick with making batch files that open an infinite number of tabs . I always heard C++ is the best, but some others say Java is the most powerful. Which doesn't really make sense, but it's widely used in the commercial industry. Do you know how to code using Java? I only know a tiny bit with the MC server I co-own with my friends.

As much as programming does sound cool, I'll stick with my dream of being a Mech or civil engineer.

    What's your major?

I'm assuming since you were able to figure out how to code yourself, you must have a knack for it. Software engineering?

This town design is a masterpiece.

One must take into context the game; the first time I played maf, this town appeared in the "sc2 universe" as a beacon of light from the whole sci-fi shebang, as a forgotten remnant of humanity holding on to a thread of morality and justice in subsistance to subsist an uncertain future.

When night fell, I noticed the elements of a film noir were present and camera perspectives and subject added a Hitchcock-esque feel mixed with the absurdity of machines coupled to lost souls that have been dehumanized by their own technostructure, wandering to an uncertain destiny with means to bring goodness in making decisions and executing fellow brothers of flesh that have been corrupted to various degrees, in the same vein as the relentless industrial wheels churn with the intent of a better future that somehow also meant their downfall.

And when the sun rose, I noticed this town of bare and faceless beings still manage to hold on to their duty, to preserve anl instinct of survival and be as much as possible themselves in the essence of their individual nature with what is left of their society by the means of speech and wit. I was one of them.

Java is widely used on numerous devices that you might not be aware of, such as vending machines, VCRs, watches, etc. It's considered more secure because you do not get access to lower level memory functions as you would in a language like C++ (generally). This makes it ideal for programming those devices. It also means you don't need to worry about memory management and garbage collection because the virtual machine takes care of that. Syntax wise they're almost identical as you probably know.

If you want to make a game, though, start with an existing engine such as SC2, Unity, or even GameMaker.

I'm actually a few days from being 20 and the game is about 15 months old; I made it in college. Also, Java is NOT the most powerful, but it's the most standard and cross-platform.

    Computer Engineering.

I stand corrected. I guess this really does make sense. Hadn't thought of it like that.
