General Discussion vs Cirlce Jerk
What are the thoughts of the community on whether something should be in Circle Jerk or General Discussion?
Also, should Circle Jerk posts show up in the side bar on 'new forum posts?'

Re: General Discussion vs Cirlce Jerk
As a non admin, I'd think that General Discussion shouldn't be used for troll/nonsensical posts.
And I don't think that circle jerk posts should show up on the side bar.
Re: General Discussion vs Cirlce Jerk
I think that GD should remain clean, and that Circlejerk should remain as it is: not on the side bar. It was changed, and the site had became much better because of it, honestly.
Re: General Discussion vs Cirlce Jerk
I personally think CJ posts shouldn't count towards post count
Re: General Discussion vs Cirlce Jerk
ahahhaa who cares about post count.
Re: General Discussion vs Cirlce Jerk
This site hides its CJ like a shy maiden hides her bosom.
This site should bear its bosom with pride. Covering boobs is an unnecessary social construct anyway.
Re: General Discussion vs Cirlce Jerk
This whole thread is begging to get derailed tbh.
Re: General Discussion vs Cirlce Jerk
I agree that non-sensical threads should be in Circlejerk. The way I see it though it can be a fine line between decent discussion topic or non-sensical topic. As long as discussion in GD threads remain on topic I believe they should stay there even if the topic might be non-sensical since it keeps activity higher. Especially since what might be non-sensical to some might be an interesting topic for another.
It's tough to blanket rule it either way.
Re: General Discussion vs Cirlce Jerk
In all honesty, it never really hit me that notifications for CJ threads used to appear in the sidebar. Did that make a big difference?
That's really interesting how a slight change to the UI like that can subtly shift people's whole notion of the site's focus. Especially a site like this which is, in some sense, dedicated to creating psychological tricks and trying to see through psychological tricks lol.
I guess in a world of diminshing attention spans and social media dominance people are just so much more likely to click on what's right in front of them and catches their eye.
Re: General Discussion vs Cirlce Jerk
There's also this whole sent from my laptop using tapatalk thing and people not even using the forum sidebar

The removal of CJ posts on the side was because a certain user shitposted 50 times a day. All that was seen on the sidebar were their posts in CJ.

Oh yeah about that:
Can't the sidebar just be fixed to only show one newest post per thread instead of listing everything that's happening in the one spammiest thread?

That would be delving into website features that I think only
@Cryptonic
and
@Brendan
has access to. That does sound like a good idea, whether there is an option or plugin for that is beyond my knowledge. What you're saying is basically what clicking 'New posts' achieves in the top left corner. I personally use this more than the sidebar.
Re: General Discussion vs Cirlce Jerk
I see it like..
GD stays on topic. It's a discussion about the OP.
CJ doesn't often stay on topic, and threads are more like conversations.

I'll take a peek.
Re: General Discussion vs Cirlce Jerk
Unfortunately, can't limit it to 1 new post per thread. Only options are:
Maximum Posts
This is the maximum number of posts that will display in the block.
Length of Thread Title
This setting allows you to specify how many characters of the thread title to display in the block.
Length of Post Preview Text
This setting allows you to specify how many characters of the post preview text to display in the block.
Forums Limit
You can choose to display posts in specific forums.
Items Date Cutoff
Set how many days here to be cut off.

Hmmm.. could we circumvent that issue by making multiple copies of the new posts widget for each major forum section? It’s not like it’s a big deal if we add more to the bottom of the sidebar right?

Also, the “new forum mafia posts” widget could really be limited to like 1 post. I mean I think that widget is only ever used to get a quick link to the current FM game after all

Don’t know what you’re talking about, my thread about which Starcraft characters can say the n word is pretty on topic
Re: General Discussion vs Cirlce Jerk
I think common sense should apply.
Some of the significant issues I have had in this community came from people acting like X is acceptable because it does not 'technically' mean Y
We are people and not robots
