View Full Version : Stealthbomber enters a pokemon draft league!

Hey all! Over the summer I decided it would be fun to take part in a small, informal draft tournament. Here's basically how it works:
1. Each person alternates picking pokemon in a snake draft
2. You must pick a tier 1, a tier 2, two tier 3, a tier 4, and a tier 5 mon.
3. You must draft ONLY one mega
4. You spend the remaining 400 points among drafting 4 remaining mons (Tier 1s are 180, Tier 2s are 120, Tier 3s are 100, Tier 4s are 60, and tier 5s are 40.)
5. After the draft you may pick two of your pokemon to be your designated Z-Crystal holders. You don't need to bring a z-crystal on them each week but they're the only ones who can have it.

As a result, you get 11 pokemon, and then bring 6 of them with different movesets to fight a predetermined opponent who did the same thing. There's a whopping 12 rounds in this tournament, and unless I get an overwhelming amount of negative feedback about it, I'll be reporting how well I do on the site!

I drafted (in this order)
Excadrill [Tier 1] <Z Crystal Holder>
Tapu Fini [Tier 1]
Kyurem (Regular) [Tier 3]
Mega Tyranitar [Mega] (+20 points for drafting a lower tier mega)
Trevenant [Tier 4]
Porygon-Z [Tier 3] <Z Crystal Holder>
Cloyster [Tier 3]
Stoutland [Tier 5]
Klefki [Tier 2]
Galvantula [Tier 3]
Lampent [Tier 5]

During the league I'm hoping to trade off Lampent for Charizard [Tier 5], which was picked two picks before I was going to pick it. I'm also hoping to obtain Gigalith [Tier 3] at some point during the league.

Stay tuned for the week 1 post!

Nice, if people like it, we could even try to organise such a tournament on the site, what would you say ?

Cloyster required a turn to set up to be brutally effective, and even after that it has limited coverage move options.

The first battle is against the Boston Vinewhips, drafting the lightning fast team of
Metagross [Tier 3]
Raikou [Tier 1]
M. Garchomp [Mega] (+40 points for drafting a low tier mega)
Kartana [Tier 1]
Sawk [Tier 5]
Spiritomb [Tier 4]
Togekiss [Tier 2] <Z-Crystal holder>
Gogoat [Tier 5]
Darmanitan [Tier 3]
Shuckle [Tier 4] <Z-Crystal holder>
Crobat [Tier 3]

http://replay.pokemonshowdown.com/gen7ou-591296365

The battle leads off with me reading him to go for a shuckle lead. I set up a swords dance in front of the shuckle, expecting him to go for a sticky web or stealth rock. Instead he goes for... power split (https://pokemondb.net/move/power-split). (Linked because I didn't know what it did prior to this battle either.) After taking out the shuckle he sends in togekiss, which gets swiftly taken down with a flinch for some sweet irony. Knowing that I can't outspeed the incoming darmanitan, I go out into my Lampent which absorbs the hit with Flash Fire. He then pulls out an earthquake. Good prep on his part, I have no flying type pokemon to avoid the earthquake. After that I send in my Choice Scarfed Kyurem, which is able to move faster than the Darmanitan and get a clean earth power kill. He sends in Kartana, which has a 94% chance to survive an earth power. Sadly, he does. Then, in a moment of glory, he goes for swords dance. I'm able to mop up the kartana while he goes into mega garchomp. I switch back out, unable to ice beam the garchomp due to my choice scarf, into Tapu Fini. My opponent... sets up a sandstorm and kills Fini. After that I'm able to mop up the game by spamming earthquake on excadrill.

I'm pretty proud of the way that I played this game even though it wasn't a particularly skillful opponent. My only mistake was leaving lampent in on the earthquake from darmanitan and even that gave me a free switch into kyurem. A 4-0 victory and an excellent way to start off the tournament.

Week Three

My opponent this week was Adayer of the New Orleans Pelippers.
Adayer has had a bit of a rough time so far, losing his first match 0-5 and his opponent week 2 being on vacation, and he has yet to battle him.

Adayer drafted the versatile team of:
Infernape
Florges
Krookodile
Slowbro
Heliolisk
Roserade
Druddigon
M. Pidgeot
Registeel
Gengar
Armaldo
Yellow names indicate Z-Captains

http://replay.pokemonshowdown.com/gen7anythinggoes-596138193

My opponent brought the team of Registeel, Infernape, Armaldo, Krookodile, Gengar, and Slowbro.
I brought the team of D-Dance Mega Tyranitar, Scarfed Kyurem, Agility Z-Hyper Beam Porygon-Z, Literally-Just-Normal-Klefki, Shell Smash Cloyster, and Lampent w/ Protect to hold against z moves

BATTLE RECAP:
I led with mega tyranitar expecting my opponent to lead with registeel to set up rocks, and set up a dragon dance. I go for a second as he superpowers me, putting me on 25% health. I earthquake his registeel and he sends in slowbro, which I also dispose of with a crunch. He sends in gengar, and I crunch that as well. He survives on sash and goes for a destiny bond. Knowing there wasn't a way to get through this gengar, I decided to let my T-Tar die and pick up the revenge kill with my Kyurem (scarfed). He sends in infernape and I'm forced to switch out, into lampent. He predicts this and uses U-Turn, and goes directly into krook. Expecting a Z Move, I go for protect, as he reveals pursuit. This leads to an awkward minute where we're both trying to figure out what happens next and he ends up just using earthquake and kills me. Seeing an opportunity, I go into cloyster and set up a shell smash. From there I'm able to sweep him for the clean 4-0.

PERSONAL ANALYSIS:
I think the only mistake I made this game was not using crunch on t-tar to kill the destiny bond sash gengar, instead relying on scarfed kyurem. But the result would have been the same.

Not allowed.
Using baton pass to pass stats to pokemon is also not allowed.

edit:
Omni-boosting z moves in general (Celebrate, Conversion, Forest's Curse, Geomancy, Happy Hour, Hold Hands, Purify, Sketch, Trick-or-Treat) are not allowed. But lets be honest why the fuck are you using z-geomancy on smeargle or z-purify on pyukumuku?

Week Four
My opponent this week was Bash of the Seattle Salandits
Bash is the creator of the league and a very good battler. He's had some very great games so far and was 2-1 in the league prior to the battle.

He had the ridiculous draft of
Tapu Koko
Latios
Vaporeon
Entei
Heracross
Bronzong
Rhydon
Skuntank
M. Sableye
Slurpuff
Tsareena

http://replay.pokemonshowdown.com/gen7anythinggoes-598143498

My opponent brought the team of:
Tapu Koko, Latios, Vaporeon, Heracross, Bronzong and Mega Sableye
I brought Dual Screen Tapu Fini, Stall Trevenant, Specs Kyurem, Dual Dance Porygon-Z, Toxic Spikes Lead Cloyster, and WishPass Xatu

This battle is a 48 turn monstrosity so I won't even attempt to recap it here.

I win 1-0.
Bash is a very good battler and I'm very happy to be battling against these very experienced trainers. Bash told me after the battle that he's currently in 4 other leagues, in addition to hosting this one.
The last turn was a surprise win for both of us because he turned out to be adamant heracross to my modest Porygon and I barely outsped.
We were both laughing in discord afterward.
I made a number of mistakes and mispredictions. The biggest and most prominent of them all was that... turn with Porygon-Z vs Vaporeon.
If you're curious, that was a 50% roll to kill because he brought mixed defenses vaporeon. I still should've gone for it, or better yet, just set up +4 or +6 on bronzong. My wiki berry would've allowed me to take some priority hits.
