View Full Version : Turbo Mode FM [The Ideas Thread]

An idea I've been toying with that I'm going to put up for feedback:

Between forum mafias, so you don't go insane without anything to do come's the Turbo FM project.

This project is restricted to players who have completed at least one FM.

Day Phases are 1 hour. Night phases are 30mins*. There is no RP and everything is done in a single day thread that is locked and unlocked as the game progresses. The original post will be updated as lynches/kills are made.

Night Chats will be done via PMs with a mod CC'd in all pms (so the mod and the intended target get the pm), so this entire game can be played in a single thread in this forum as to not mess around with the main FM. I will also allow private IRCs/Skype Chats to be used for night chats only assuming a mod can be present. Day phases, these are not allowed as usual

This game will not be Anonymous.

*aside from the night 3

Following times are an example. I know i'm not going to be able to please the whole world with NA / Euro players but I'll try.

Saturday:

Day 1: 12 midday - 1pm
Night 1: 1pm-1.30pm
Day 2: 1.30pm-2.30pm
Night 2: 2.30pm-3pm.
Day 3: 3pm-4pm.
Night 3: 4pm-->

Sunday:

--> 11:30am
Day 4: 11:30am-12.30pm
Night 4: 12.30pm-1pm
Day 5: 1pm-2pm.
Night 5: 2pm-2.30pm
Final Day: 2.30-3.30pm
Final Night 3.30pm-4pm

Game will be automatically ended if it reaches this stage with win priorities similar to SC2 Mafia.

This game will be capped at 20 players.

This is not a sign up thread. I am looking for feedback at this time.

The role list will look something like:

Godfather
Consigliere
Framer

Serial Killer
Witch
Executioner

Mayor
Sheriff
Investigator
Investigator (could be swapped for 4th mafia)
Vigilante
Doctor
Mason Leader
Lookout
Veteran
Citizen
Citizen
Citizen
Citizen
Citizen

Ideas and feedback go.

Sounds like a ton of fun! But hard as hell to co-ordinate timezones and player abilities

Suggestions:
+1 Benign Neutral
+1 Random Town
-1 Inv
-1 Cit

Sounds like a lot of fun.

I like this idea a lot.

People in different timezones would not be able to partecipate probably, but nevertheless it should be fun for those who can (the majority anyway).

The setup seems fine, except the town has too many investigative roles considering the lookout. Removing one Investigator and putting a 4th mafia as you said would maybe balance it out.

This sounds like fun.

A few question:

What would the minimum amount of players allowed to play?
You say that the only restriction is that the players have to have played at least one FM. Are there enough of these players in one time-zone to fill 20 slots?

Your stance on lurking is that it is not supposed to be punished. Will lurking here be punished because the person signed up for that specific time?

Wouldn't there be some down time from night end to day start? (Calculating what happened)

How will you keep the citizens from becoming bored and go afk?
This irks me like no other part of FM.

Would there be a dead chat? or would the dead start PM'ing each other when they die?

Well, looks good!
I think that you should take the 2nd invest out and put in a mafioso. Also, make it so godfather cant attack w/ out another mafia.
I guess when its on im in!

I like the idea, but with only one hour per day/night cycle. It is nearly impossible for anyone who has classes or works to actually participate. As well as the whole time zone thing.

Considering normal FM begins with a 48 to 24 hour time frame. I think turbo mafia staring with an 8 hour time frame would still be plenty fast.

I like it, basically a normal SCII/Mafia game but in-house and a chance for more discussion. Day-length kinda has to be dictated by the players - in this forum I think at least an hour would be best, because there's players that love to analyse and discuss and people that like time to compose messages/fit it around their busy lives.

I'm normally a fan of Random role slots, but I see why you might take them out for something like this (games will probably go quicker if there aren't random roles).

I think another Random Mafia instead of an Inv would work better - an Escort or something perhaps

I don't think that increasing the intervals is necessarily the solution. I think short will actually work better.

There are some time zones that work well. For example US saturday afternoons starting at approx 3pm are good.

This is roughly 7-8am sunday for Australians
Obviously 3pm ish for the US kids
and 8-9pm-ishhh for europeans

I don't think I'll have problems filling 20 slots as we fill 38 slots for normal FM very very fast.

Your stance on lurking is that it is not supposed to be punished. Will lurking here be punished because the person signed up for that specific time?

If you have a history of lurking you wont be invited. You need to have played a minimum of 1 FM. Issue is we'll be playing in an unprotected forum space where anyone can post. I'll need to get some extra permissions from DR so I can instantly mute/ban anyone who tries to mess up the game.

Wouldn't there be some down time from night end to day start? (Calculating what happened)

Nope. I'll have a team of mods so we can do it in minutes... I'm thinking me and two others. Hopefully we dont have anyone holding their actions to the final seconds though.

How will you keep the citizens from becoming bored and go afk?
This irks me like no other part of FM.

If people dont understand the point of citizens in FM they shouldn't play. Citizens have a vital role in A) protecting the power roles B) Joining the masons to increase town knowledge of innocents and C) Helping the town with majority votes. In Turbo FM, if the hour ends without majority being reached the person with the highest votes at that time WILL BE LYNCHED REGARDLESS like in ballot mode sc2.

Would there be a dead chat? or would the dead start PM'ing each other when they die?

Good question, haven't thought about it. I dont think we'll need a dead chat as we can discuss the game at it's conclusion because it's so short.

Trying to hold it on a weekend to prevent this. 8 hours is pretty much the same as we have now, I want it to feel like a different style of FM gameplay with really uptempo decisions and there to feel like there's a sense of urgency / pressure... I'm also hoping it doesn't become a super lol roleclaim festival, but we'll find out.

Those are decent times. I'll try and work it... it probably wont occur between FM7 and FMDR, but after FMDR maybe.

Oh I misread the timing for the weekend. I retract my statement.

Probably before FMDR would be best. I heard he won't be starting it until after he transitions the forum, and FM7 is basically wrapped.

Opera may be slow but you can set webpages to auto refresh. Keeping games to ~15 players and around 20 hours would be good for most players, I feel.

turbo mafia would be fun but I probably won't be able to do it, late november early december is when assignments are due and exams are coming up.

This sounds like fun.

There is too many town compared to the number of scum/neutrals though. Consider the SC2 games with 15 people you get 3 mafia, 1 neutral killer and 2 other neutrals. So with 20 people make it 4 mafia and 1 more benign neutral. 12 town, 8 non-town.

In FM's there's always cult which turns townies into scum, if you have no cult then you need to put more scum to compensate.

Well seeing as we're on the new forum this turbo one isn't going to run this weekend.

I assume FM6 sign ups will be around soon.

I am going to do a Masters Cup soon, however.
