I'm sorry, I'm still new to this site. I just got a notification that I received a "reputation point." Could someone explain to me what that is? I tried searching for that, and as I skimmed through the list of topics, I didn't catch anything relevant to my question.

You collect reputation over time by reaching certain amounts of posts and at certain points one bar will be added which you can see to the left right above the join date. You can "rep" a post, the little button on the bottom left of a post, and add a message so the person knows that you liked (or disliked, in case you want to "negrep" a post, meaning giving it negative reputation) this specific post.

That's the gist of it, though I have already dismissed it as unimportant.. yet somehow I still want it

It affects the way people perceive you and the way you perceive yourself. Rep has no actual effect on any practical use of the forum. Also, maybe we can get you to 10 rep with the fewest possible posts... epic.
