okay so I'm in the cult consisting of three members. We all agree to convert the known investigator. One of us dies by mason bludgeon. We are confused so I assume the claimed executioner is a witch, so I say that. Eventually we lose and town wins.

Game ends.

Guy we tried to convert was an investigator.
There was no doctor.
There was no Witch.
There was no bus driver.

Explain....

Converting happens after everything else.

My guess is that the guy that died was send to convert the investigator.

The above is correct.

If your recruiter gets killed you don't get a recruit and Masons are specifically coded to go before cult.

but he died to a mason bludgeon, does that mean that masons can kill at night now (cult only?)

I thought that recruiting actions were before killing actions but well ... with the mason leader kill ... dunno.

The order of operations is:

Mason Recruiting

Everyone else Killing

Cultist Recruiting


Cultist is literally the last thing that happens. If a Mason Leader tries to recruit a cultist, the Mason Leader will bludgeon the hell out of the Cultist; but this uses up a Recruit charge.
